Bookshelf: Selections from the Slipstream

Get your hot, fresh recs right here! We not only want to publish great genre-bending work, we also want to promote reading it. Here on the blog we’ll share what we’re reading, what we’re reading again, and readings we can’t stop thinking about.

What does it mean to be genre-bending? At the Press, we’ve been talking a lot about literary labels, such as slipstream, fabulist, surreal, and experimental, and how no single label encompasses the kind of work we like. Slipstream comes pretty close, though. It has been defined by some as writing that creates the effect of cognitive dissonance -- that odd feeling of suddenly knowing reality is not as it was and never has been. In honor of that odd feeling, today we’ve got a slipstream top-ten list from managing editor Deborah Steinberg. Who doesn't love a list?

Deborah says, “I love these books because they create unique realities that cause us to reconsider our own reality and the possibilities it might contain if we use our imaginations.”

Deborah Steinberg's Top Ten Books From The Slipstream
1. Invisible Cities - Italo Calvino
2. Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
3. The Passion - Jeanette Winterson
4. The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin
5. Trout Fishing In America - Richard Brautigan
6. Gravity's Rainbow - Thomas Pynchon
7. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
8. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
9. Autobiography of Red - Anne Carson
10. Everything Is Illuminated - Jonathan Safran Foer

If you haven't read these books, treat yourself to some time in their finely-wrought worlds. (Here’s a great independent bookstore finder from Indie Bound.)
